Education
Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board govern Ajax. There are five high schools and many elementary schools in Ajax. Two Catholic high schools are Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School and Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School. Three public secondary high schools are J. Pickering High School, Clarke Richardson Collegiate and Ajax High School.
Hospitals
Lake Ridge Health Ajax and Pickering Hospital, in addition to several walk-in and urgent care clinics, offer health services in Ajax. Some of these clinics are Kingston Medical Clinic and Pharmacy, Westney Heights Medical Centre, Ajax Family Care Centre, and Children’s After Hours Walk-In Clinic. Ajax and Pickering General Hospital was first developed in 1954 with 38 adult and children accommodation capacity. It was increased in size to 50 beds in 1958 and in 1964, a major expansion to 127 beds occurred. In 1975, emergency and outpatient services were enlarged. The rise in population in this Town has stimulated a further expansion. In the fall of 1990, approval was issued to further expand it. In 1999, Hospital combined with Centenary Health Centre in Scarborough to become part of the Rouge Valley Health System. In 2007, Construction on a $60 million increase in size program began, however that has been spoiled by the highly controversial closure of the 3 West Mental Health ward in 2008.
