Education
Pickering governs Conseil scolaire de district catholic Center-Sud, Counseil scolaire viamonde, Durham catholic district school board and Durham district school board. These boards run 17 elementary schools and two high schools, pine ridge secondary school and Dumbarton high school. Pickering high school was shifted to Ajax after the change of Pickering boundaries. Catholic board operates eight elementary schools and one secondary school, Saint Mary Catholic Secondary School. French public school board runs École Ronald-Marion, which work for both elementary and secondary students. A private school chain, Blaisdale Montessori School has many branches throughout Pickering serving children from preschool age to grade 8. Montessori Learning Centre also works as a private elementary and junior high school there. Durham Secondary Academy and Middle School also serve in Durham Region, a private high school and middle school for grades 5 to 12. In September 2012, Durham College/Centennial College Joint Learning Site developed at the North terminus of pedestrian bridge. Joint Learning Site offers primarily graduate certificate programs with a number of complementary classes and courses. At the time of its start, it was only public post-secondary institution in the Province of Ontario with a direct connection to public transit.
Emergency
Durham regional police provides police services in Pickering from division office present at Eastern section of the city. From this station, officers also patrol Ajax. Four stations with a force of full time fighters provide Pickering fire services. Claremont fire hall now have a crew of full time fighters 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Durham region provides ambulance as well as emergency services.
Parks
Pickering has over 220 hectares of open space and parkland including 4 conservation areas, over 85 parks, numerous sports fields and trails. Pickering’s gem is its waterfront. Approximately 5 km is accessible of the 7.6 km of Lake Ontario while 2.7 km being beach. Pickering has different streams including Dumbarton, pine, Amberlea, petticoat ganatsekiagon and Duffins creeks with wooded valley lands that expand from the waterfront to the urban areas. Conservation areas in Pickering are Claremont nature center, petticoat creek urban park, greenwood conservation area and Altona forest which are maintained by the Toronto and region conservation authority. The rogue national urban park is adjacent to the westerly boundary of Pickering.
